A cryptocurrency’s market cap increases when its price per unit increases. Alternatively, an increase in circulating supply can also lead to an increase in market cap. However, an increase in supply also tends to lead to a lower price per unit, and the two cancel each other out to a large extent. In practice, an increase in price per unit is the main way in which a cryptocurrency’s market cap grows. Since June, the price of Ethereum has been in an uptrend alongside most other crypto coins. However, ETH has seen a 130% increase from its low to its current peak of $2030, compared to Bitcoin’s 43% rise in the same space of this time. This demonstrates how keen crypto investors are to snap up Ethereum at these low prices ahead of its upcoming merge - an event one Ethereum developer is calling “one of the most historic crypto events ever”.
